IAWIS Project

IAWIS??? What’s that? MMM……now that’s a question. Well it stands for the “International Association of Word and Image Studies” Bit of a mouthful isn’t it? No wonder they abbreviated it down thank goodness for that. (Click here to check out their site!) Anyway back to the main point of why i brought this up, they’re having a conference at my Uni, (University of Ulster – Belfast Campus) and they asked the Viscom (2nd year) students if we could come up with some sort of branding for the conference (emphasis that it was for the conference they which was “Displaying Word and Image” and not the association’s branding) For this project we were to produce three visuals, below are my three visuals!!
The actual brand logo
A website layout
Poster
(P.S was so chuffed, my design got short-listed for the final selection, so happy ^_^) Please note the computer visual is not the actual website but a layout of what would be.
My design was influenced greatly by the modernism movement especially the works of Piet Mondrain, Rothko (which if you look closely has one of Rothko’s painting overlayed in the text “Displayed” although it’s very subtle i still think there will be a copyright issue with the usage so i was sort of glad that my work was unsuccessful, maybe a bit inappropriate and strange but i think i would just prefer it more if it was my own original work. Well that’s just my opinion anyway, the concept design is basically an abstract form of a frame portrayed with type. The “Display” as previously mentioned is also connected with this idea. During the crit, it was mentioned that i should change the hierarchy of the type as the words “Display” is too dominant compared to the “Word and Image.” However in contradiction with this, personally i thought the focus should have been more on “Display” as the IAWIS tends to have a few conferences regarding “Word and Image.” Following this i tried and experimented a bit more with the layout, however i was unsatisfied with outcome as the arrangement in type appeared too muddled and jumble. Let me know your thoughts. ^_^

[...] An idea that the client has picked and is being short listed is that of a very talented classmate Winnie Shek, check out her design here. [...]
